Best’s Wines Great Western is one of Australia’s ‘best kept’ winery secrets. Founded in 1866, we are a family-owned and operated winery with some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world. Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling are our specialties and we also produce small-parcel wines that are available taste and purchase at our cellar door. Best’s Concongella Vineyard is home to Henry Best’s original Nursery Block, containing almost 40 different varieties as well as the 1868 plantings of Shiraz and Pinot Meunier. These are among Australia’s most notable vineyard resources.
Built in 1866, our Concongella Cellar Door is the heart of Best’s operation. This truly memorable place is housed in the original stables. Henry Best’s journal, with entries dating back to 1866, is on display, along with interesting artifacts and historic family photos.
Visitors can take a tour of the underground cellars, which were hand-dug in the 1860s, and view the original Nursery Block plantings, both of which are a significant slice of Australian wine history. Visitors can enjoy premium and private tasting experiences, food and wine pairing and special events throughout the year. There’s something very special about the wines from Great Western. The pedigree of our historic vineyards allows us to make elegant, finely structured wines with great intensity and balance. Best’s avoids the heavy-handed use of oak or winery interventions; instead, the winemaking team allows the fruit from Great Western to tell its own story. Like many classic long-lived wines, their best attributes are revealed over time.
Best’s flagship wines, the Thomson Family Shiraz and Bin No. 0 Shiraz, have been designated “Exceptional” and “Outstanding” respectively in Langtons Classification VII. Best’s Wines is a James Halliday 5-Star Rated Winery and has been awarded Best Value Winery in Australia in the 2021 Wine Companion.
