Description

The Australian Nurses Memorial Centre awards scholarships to postgraduate nursing and midwifery students in honour of Australian military nurses who died serving their country during the Second World War.

Our co-founders Vivian Bullwinkel and Betty Jeffrey survived three-and-a-half years in prisoner-of-war camps in Sumatra. By the time they returned home they had lost 41 comrades.

While still captives, Vivian and Betty vowed to remember their fallen friends by establishing a centre for the advancement of the nursing and midwifery professions.

When they eventually returned to Australia they embarked upon a fundraising drive around Victoria and, in collaboration with Wilma Oram, Annie Sage, Edith Hughes-Jones, Albert Coates and others, raised enough money to purchase 'Oban', a property at 431 St Kilda Rd.

On 14 May 1949 the War Nurses’ Memorial Centre opened its doors for business and on 19 February 1950 was officially dedicated by Sir Dallas Brooks “in memory of those sisters who lost their lives during the war.”

Today the ANMC awards more than $150,000 every year across a number of postgraduate nursing and midwifery scholarships – including the Vivian Bullwinkel Award, the Betty Jeffrey Award and the Beth Cuthbertson Scholarship.

In so doing, we honour our founders’ intent to create a living memorial to every nurse who died while serving her country.
