The ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes (2017–2024) led pioneering research that deepened global understanding of climate extremes and their connections to climate change.
With an emphasis on critical topics such as drought, marine heatwaves, and extreme weather, the Centre delivered influential research that informed policy and advanced climate modelling capabilities.
Beyond scientific achievements, the Centre’s impact has endured through its development of national research infrastructure, its support for emerging climate scientists, and its commitment to a collaborative and innovative research culture that strengthened climate resilience efforts both in Australia and globally.
The Centre reduced Australia’s economic, social, and environmental vulnerability to climate extremes.
It achieved this by:
- Developing and leading fundamental climate science
- Improving the predictions of extreme weather and climate events
- Fostering collaborative science between five of Australia’s leading universities and partner organisations
- Training and investing in the climate science leaders of the future
- Sharing knowledge with governments, policymakers, industry, and the community
Climate extremes affect many facets of Australian society, including health, soil and water, agriculture, infrastructure, energy security, and financial security. The Centre’s research programs focused on four core areas – weather and climate interactions, attribution and risk, drought, and ocean extremes – all underpinned by work in climate modelling to improve the analysis of past extremes and the prediction of future extremes.
The Centre was funded by the Australian Research Council and its five partner universities: the University of New South Wales, Monash University, the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Tasmania.
