Description

Hi! We’re the AMR Vet Collective and we're here to help veterinarians (especially Aussie and Kiwi vets!) to keep up to date with Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) and what it means for our patients and our practices.

We translate the science around AMR and stewardship into meaningful and practical continuing education and resources that veterinarians can call upon to make informed, evidence-based decisions in their daily practice.

We want every clinician to feel confident in understanding stewardship principles so that they can diagnose, prescribe, and manage infectious patients with confidence.

We talk to experts from all areas of veterinary science to get their perspective and share what they tell us through our social media, website, and Online Vet AMS course.

What is antimicrobial resistance?

When microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi are able to resist the effects of medicines designed to destroy or inactivate them, they are considered 'antimicrobial resistant'. The mechanisms for this varies between microorganisms but one of the key factors influencing selection for these microorganism is our use of antimicrobial agents.

What does AMR mean for human and animal health?

When microorganisms become resistant, simple infections can become chronic, serious, or even life threatening. This leads to increased costs of care, more antimicrobial use, and a higher rate of treatment failure.

More antimicrobial use leads to more selection pressure for resistance and a growing reliance on a shrinking group of effective antibiotics.

As the World Health Organisation has acknowledged, AMR does not recognize geographic or human–animal borders. It is a true One Health challenge, that requires human, animal and environmental health professionals to work together to #savethelobster.
