AA Smartfuel is one of New Zealand’s largest loyalty programmes, with more than 95% of Kiwi households registered with an AA Smartfuel card and more than 1200 locations nationwide where the programme’s 2.7 million cardholders can accumulate fuel savings.
Started as a pilot in Palmerston North by local entrepreneur Scott Fitchett and business partner Ian Sutcliffe in 2010, the innovative rewards programme joined forces with the NZ Automobile Association in 2011 to become AA Smartfuel and is now a true NZ start-up success story.
AA Smartfuel partners, BP and GAS, offer strong fuel discounts every day of at least 6 cents per litre, and a strong stable of retail partners, including Countdown, ASB Bank, AA Insurance, Repco and Contact Energy, offer additional cents per litre savings to cardholders every day.
While the AA Smartfuel team is still small, the savings for cardholders are huge – with up to 5000 Kiwis getting a free tank of gas every month with AA Smartfuel, around $120 million total a year earnt by cardholders in fuel discounts, and more than $780 million in total savings earnt since the programme began.
AA Smartfuel was a Gold Winner at the Reader’s Digest Quality Service Award in 2017. It also won the TVNZ-NZ Marketing Awards Consumer Products & Services category in 2013 and 2014.
AA Smartfuel Limited is a joint venture company in partnership with the New Zealand Automobile Association Incorporate. It launched nationwide on Monday 7 November 2011.
