1000 Guru is an Indonesian non-profit organisation committed to alleviating poverty by providing improved access to education and empowering local communities. Founded in 2012 by Jemi Ngadiono, 1000 GURU is a licensed civil society organisation under the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs (AHU-0004425.AH.01.12. TAHUN 2019 TANGGAL 01 MARET 2019).
Started off as an online community, 1000 GURU has transformed into a solid educational organisation with 42 regional coordinators and more than 500 team members across 34 provinces in Indonesia.
Our core programs:
1. TRAVELING AND TEACHING Traveling and Teaching (TnT) is a three-day program that allows volunteers between the ages of 19 - 35 years old to visit a range of beautiful places and teach primary school students in remote areas across 34 provinces in Indonesia. The main objective of this program is to encourage children, cultivating hopes that everything is possible. We target children who come from low-income families to continue their study and believe in their dreams, no matter how difficult the circumstances might be.
2. SMART CENTRE Smart Centre is 1000 GURU long-term program which seeks to improve child nutrition and literacy rate in underserved areas, especially in the eastern part of Indonesia. We provide free tutoring and nutritional feeding programs at schools in order to improve students' nutritional status, promote school enrolment and increase class attendance.
As of 2020, 1000 GURU has partnered with more than 100 schools, reached 10.500 children, built 4 libraries (in Sumba and Lombok), 3 prayer rooms, 3 community hubs.
3. TEACHING AND GIVING A one-day program that invites volunteers to teach and donate school supplies (books, backpacks, uniforms) to orphanages or disadvantaged schools.
4. 1000 GURU AWARDS An annual award tailored for dedicated teachers in remote areas. We team up with our regional coordinators and members to select the top 10 teachers with inspiring stories.
